Form meets function—fluidly.

Sway is an S-shaped, multi-orientation tray crafted through a fusion of steam-bent solid wood and vacuum-bent plywood, finished with a rich walnut veneer. Designed for versatility, it functions as a serving tray, display piece, or even a fly cover—encouraging playful, adaptive interactions with food and presentation.

The piece reflects an in-depth engagement with material behavior: steam bending offered fluid, expressive curves, while vacuum bending provided structural stability and control. Building custom molds and mastering the rhythm of wood manipulation were key to shaping Sway's elegant form. The result is a tray that transforms everyday rituals through material-driven design.

Vacuum Bending Process

A key part of the build, vacuum bending ensured structural integrity for the tray’s layered plywood side. This process required custom mold-making, precise timing, and consistent pressure for a seamless curve.

Steam Bending in Progress

Shown here is the shaping of the solid wood using steam—capturing the hands-on process behind the tray’s organic S-curve. The technique reflects both experimentation and a deep respect for the craft of woodworking.
